The Danville Area Humane Society is thrilled to tell you that an ordinance was passed unanimously by Danville City Council tonight that bans the constant tethering of companion animals! As of July 1, 2010, it will be illegal to:

Tether a companion animal for more than 4 hours in a 24 hour period,
Tether a companion animal when the temperature is below 32 degrees
Tether a companion animal under 4 months old
Tether any sick or injured animal
Tether any companion animal to a fixed point. (specifics to be made public at a later date)

The Danville Area Humane Society has committed $10,000 to help people purchase chain link lots for their dogs. A requirement will be that we will also be allowed to spay/neuter the dog.

We are deeply grateful to each person who played a huge part in this accomplishment by e-mailing and calling City Council members and getting friends and family members to also support the ordinance. We now need to flood City Council members' e-mails and phone lines with expressions of gratitude.

Summary

Summary of our Desired Ban on Constant Chaining of Dogs

This will NOT affect any leash law. Dogs will not be allowed to roam freely.

This will NOT affect owners who temporarily chain their dogs for brief periods of time.

This WILL prohibit the chaining of dogs for more than 3 hours during a 24 hour period.

We ask that the ban take effect on July 1, 2011.

Ways to Help Campaign to Stop Constant Chaining of Dogs

1. Call or e-mail each of the City Council members, encouraging them to vote in favor of an ordinance to ban the constant chaining of dogs. Ask other City residents to call. Please be polite. A list of telephone numbers and e-mail addresses can be found to the right.

2. Get your friends, family members, and acquaintances to sign a petition. A pdf copy of the petition can be downloaded below.

3. We can expect that there will be people opposed to the campaign. Monitor comments at www.godanriver.com, and post positive comments about the campaign. You will need to go through an easy, brief registration in order to post comments. Please do not use offensive language. For every negative comment posted, we need to have five positive ones posted.

4. Write letters to the editor in support of an ordinance.

5. Make a donation to the Humane Society to support the campaign. Your money would be used to help pay for ads, printing costs, and mailing costs to support the campaign.

6. For more information on the plight of chained dogs, please go to www.unchainyourdog.org, dogsdeservebetter.com, www.hsus.org, and peta.org. These websites will give you great information to help answer questions.
